After quite a bit of planning, lots of preliminary work, and a workshop or two the NUTS team is currently stationed at Andøya Space Center with the main best-case goal of launching a balloon to test the viability of our work-in-progress VHF/UHF radio and ground station setup in combination with our new OBC software.

NUTS-related presentations and meetings in Geneva, January 19-21, 2015

Two students of the NUTS cubesat team have been part of a NTNU student excursion to Geneva, Switzerland, January 19-21, 2015. The aim was to visit several organisations located in the town, namely the United Nations headquarters, the Norwegian Permanent Mission, UNOSAT and CERN. The group consisted of 16 students with a technical study background. In addition to the visits and guided tours, two presentations were given in regard to NUTS, the compact radiation monitor CPT-SCOPE and other selected NTNU space activities.

Semester start-up workshop

6th European CubeSat Symposium in Switzerland

Three members of the NUTS-team, namely Amund Gjersvik, Mathias Tømmer and Timo A. Stein, have attended the 6th European CubeSat Symposium in Estavayer-le-Lac, Switzerland. During the three-day event the cubesat community got together to share results and lessons-learnt. The conference took place at the Swiss Space Systems (S-3) site close to Geneva in the period October 14-16, 2014. The event was organised by S-3 and the Von Karman Institute.

Project assignments for 2014

Below are the assignment proposals from the NUTS project. All NUTS student will work together in a team, with their individual assigned task.

As we are a multidisciplinary group with project members from several departments, different types of team- and group work must be expected. It will be required that the student joins weekly meetings with the rest of the team (consisting of staff, other project/master students and other students) to share experience and knowledge.

Students are also encouraged to apply for participation at relevant international and national workshops and conferences during their project work.

NUTS Balloon Campaign Episode IV - The GaffaSat Strikes Back

The last night at Andøya Rocket Range (ARR) was short, and even non-existent, for a number of the NUTS team members who were working hard to get the payload ready for action. The scheduled balloon launch on wednesday didn't go as planned, and we were given a final shot at launching the balloon if we could get it all ready by noon. The level of excitement and enthusiasm therefore got a tremendous spike when the tests were completed and all systems were found operational. By the time everything was set for launch the sun glimpsed between the clouds and the weather conditions were almost perfect.

The NUTS team went 300 km north of the Article circle to test the latest prototype of the satellite’s communication system. For this a balloon carrying the payload will be launched from the Andøya Rocket Range (ARR) and information will be exchanged via radio link using a special ground station. Part of the NUTS team is this week gathered at the Andøya Rocket Range (ARR) to launch a scientific balloon. The purpose of this is to test the satellite communication system. We have been working day and night in oder to get the radio system up and running. The team is very excited and looking forward to get good results during the launch on Wednesday.

Mechanical Design

Developing a pointing mechanism for NUTS

The scientific goal of the NUTS project is to take images of Earth with an infrared camera. In order to do that it is necessary to have some mechanism that can change the attitude of the satellite, e.g. the direction it is pointing. A system like that is often referred to as an Altitude Determination and Control Subsystem, or ADCS for short.

National workshop at Andøya

The three Norwegian student satellite projects all met up for a two day workshop at Andøya Rocket Range (ARS). The focus of the workshop was status updates from the different projects, as well as lessons learned sessions from the two projects with the most life time. In addition, Kjell Paulsen from Kongsberg Defense Systems held inspirational lectures about the procedures of reviews in a technical space project.
